FÜNF STERNE PLUS IM PAZIFIK
MIT DER QUEEN MARY 2 VON CHILE NACH LOS ANGELES
Five Stars Plus in the Pacific
With the Queen Mary 2 from Chile to Los Angeles
For all our QM2 lovers, we have a great new film in Flagship Video this week:
A German documentary filmed onboard in 2006 during the cruise from Valparaiso to Los Angeles. Although the narration is in German there are some great shots in it which are self-explanatory, so you don’t have to worry about your lack of German. This cruise was part of QM2’s captivating 2006 Path of Magellan Historic Passages which delved deeply into South America’s rich cultural traditions. The 14-day Andes & the Americas itinerary was the last segment of the westbound South American Odyssey, departing Valparaiso, Chile on February 8, calling on five fascinating ports in Peru, Ecuador, Panama, Costa Rica and Mexico. The reverse eastbound journey with the same calls departed March 8 from Los Angeles. This was the first time the QM2 took this route, so there were a couple of first port calls. The liner was too big for the port of Puerto Caldera and passengers had to use the tender boats to get on land.
Here is a short recap of the story line: The film follows a German couple who booked the said cruise on the internet at a last-minute bargain: They paid 6,000 Euro for a luxury stateroom which was listed in the Cunard brochure for 18,000 Euro.
The 43-minutes film covers the route from Valparaiso to Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica with a stop in Lima, Peru. You see all public rooms and get introduced to amenities and on board entertainment. Lots of interviews with crew members, officers, entertainment and spa staff. A visit to the bridge includes an interview with Commodore Ronald Warwick.
The film crew obviously liked food! Part of the footage includes interviews with chefs sommeliers and waiters. Visits to the various restaurants including Todd English’s. Follow the chefs to local markets in search for the freshest produce. They were disappointed about the fish market which did not appeal to them at all, lack of hygiene and inappropriate handling of the fish put them off. You will get a peek into the galley and follow the waiters with their heavy trays laden with culinary delights. If you are hungry, this may not be the right time to watch the film. So get yourself a glass of wine or a beer and something to nibble.
