Captain Christopher Wells

Captain Christopher Wells

I remember an incident on P&O’s Oceana in February 2008 during a Caribbean cruise when he was accused of racism. After receiving numerous complaints about sunbed hogging practices (whereby passengers reserve a sunbed by placing personal belongings and leaving it unattended for hours)  Capt. Wells announced over the tannoy that this kind of  ’Germanic behaviour’ wasn’t tolerated onboard. What was meant as a light hearted comment erupted in a ‘racism row’ that the Equality and Human Rights Commission had to deal with. Apparently few passengers felt he insulted the entire German nation which  would have to include his wife who is German…  Being a German myself I think that claim is ludicrous, he was right in brandishing this kind of behaviour and I don’t mind addressing my own folks. On a recent (almost an all French) Nile cruise we had to take on some stranded Germans who practiced this kind of ‘towel-abusing’ and it really infuriated me as much as my fellow passengers.

For those of you who haven’t met Capt. Wells or heard about him, here is a link to a very interesting interview with the Captain. I wish him well in his new position!

Capt. Chris Wells should not be confused with Capt. William Wells  who is a very popular and sought after speaker on ‘matters maritime’ and was invited by Cunard Line to be the Principal Guest Speaker for the final cruise aboard the QE2.
